Ok, by editing kernel line in grub.cfg, removing quiet splash and putting in nomodeset I was able to get a command line. Discovered that the desktop loaded fine as root user, so the problem must be something in my home folder when Deepin desktop attempts to load. Did a full upgrade as root user and will try deleting config files and folders in home folder so they get replaced, maybe that will sort it. And will install an alternative DE or WM.

Have been happy with this fast and visually pleasing system - but now its stability suddenly failed.
It now fails to load the desktop, just returns to the greeter - this is a sign of a problem causing the DE to fail to load.
I tried to boot with CLI interface, with the intention of installing LXDE as backup DE and maybe fix the problem.
But the usual solution of using grub2, ro single after kernel line did not work, only a black screen and ALT F2 does nothing.
How does one boot with CLI only in Deepin? Is there an emergency boot method?
(I tried some more primitive solutions like renaming lightdm and deepin greeter binaries so they would not start that only got me a blinking cursor with no apparent way to access a command line, ALT F2 still doing nothing)
