Gretings my dear friends! I've just installed "Deepin 25.0.10". Cannot boot into the actual system.

I got "Grub", then - Deepin animation, and then - Black Screen. Waited for hours, doesn't change anything.

I've tried "nomodeset", and booting with Kernel 6.2. Nothing helps. Black Screen.

Please help me!

My PC is like that: GPU — "AMD RADEON RX 550".
CPU — AMD FX 4300+.
RAM — 8 Gb
BIOS — LEGACY (NOT UEFI)

Have you installed it on that hardware or have you just swapped your harddisk to this system?

So you boot it up from your USB stick, installed it properly and then started it. Does it worked before? Does it crashed before or during the installation?

I personally would point the image creating tool out as the issuepoint, but I have to proof this. The recommendation from the Deepin Linux team is that you should use "Ventoy" to install it. I never used this. But I know if you create it with DD it MAY work or event bring up a black screen.

With "BalenaEtcher" I make the best experiences, but it is also related to your USB Port. I have here also a older Lenovo Laptop from 2012 with 12GB RAM, and if I try to install it on the right USB Port it fails, on the left USB Port it works....

Huge thanks to you my friend for a thorough extensive reply.

Yeah I have tried Ventoy, Balena and absolutely everything in-between. I went through checksum of ISO many-many times. And still the result's been always the same: black screen. On all my computers, no matter AMD or NVIDIA gpu; no matter BIOS or EFI; no matter laptop, tablet or desktop. :) Just a good old black screen.

Black screen in live mode, black screen in the installation effort. In my case, "Deepin 25" just won't start GUI on any real hardware. So it wasn't possible even to install the system properly. I had to use the virtual machine instead.

However on "VirtualBox 6.1" I got black screen again. There worked only one option: installation with older kernel. There I got GUI at last, and did eventually install "Deepin 25" on USB-Hard-Drive, shared between host and guest.

Then I connected the Hard Drive to SATA of my PC, and first-booted it and... got black screen again! :) :) :)

OK, now I have my own suspicion about what might go wrong. I'll check it over and give some new details later. Still, any advice on your part is deeply appreciated.

Thank you again.👍

Hello. All what I found, your system should be ready for Deepin Linux 25.

What makes me confused is that it will even not boot if I understand you correctly, there is no sign of live when you try to boot from the USB Stick, right? Have you tried just to start with a USB Stick with Linux Mint? Does this works? (this is just to get sure that your USB components (Stick and port) are working properly.

Please try this before you continue reading ;)

I have a maybe stupid idea.

Does your PC have space (possibility) for a 2nd hard drive? If so, then install it (doesn't have to or shouldn't stay inside all the time) should only be used to boot from this disk and install Deepin Linux.

Because I'm sure you have the same problem with other Linux variants like Linux Mint and the like.

Install the 2nd hard drive and start the installation as you did with a USB stick, only this time you choose the 2nd hard drive as the installation medium from which you should then boot from the BIOS.

Of course, you have to set this up there beforehand or you can simply swap the SATA cables from the 1st and 2nd hard drives.

After installation, simply remove the new hard drive and plug it back in with Deepin Linux as the 1st hard drive.

This is the answer from the integrated Deepseek AI answers me after questioned her about your Hardware.

Based on the provided context and general Linux knowledge:

Yes, your AMD FX 4300+ with 8GB RAM and a legacy-only motherboard should be sufficient to install and run Deepin Linux 25, but there are important considerations:

  1. Legacy Boot Support: Deepin Linux supports installation in Legacy BIOS Mode (often called "CSM" or "Legacy" mode in BIOS settings). Your motherboard's limitation to legacy boot is compatible. Ensure you select this mode during boot or installation if prompted.

  2. Partitioning: As your system uses legacy boot, you must partition your hard drive using MBR (Master Boot Record) during the Deepin installation, not GPT (GUID Partition Table). Formatting the target drive during installation will be necessary.

  3. Hardware Adequacy:

    • CPU (AMD FX 4300+): This is an older quad-core processor. While it meets the minimum requirements for Deepin (and most modern Linux distributions), it lacks modern instruction sets like AVX. This means it will run Deepin, but performance might be sluggish in demanding applications or with complex desktop effects. It's acceptable for basic tasks.

    • RAM (8GB): This is plenty of RAM for Deepin Linux 25 comfortably. The minimum requirement is typically around 2GB, so 8GB provides ample headroom.

  4. Potential Challenges:

    • GPU Drivers: Check if your graphics card is well-supported by the open-source drivers (AMDGPU/Radeon) included in Linux and Deepin. Older AMD cards generally have good support, but performance tuning might be needed.

    • Installation Hiccups: Legacy installations, especially on systems with multiple disks, can sometimes encounter issues with the GRUB bootloader placement. Be prepared to potentially select the correct drive (/dev/sda usually) manually during installation if GRUB fails to install automatically.

    • Performance: While it will run, expect potential slowdowns during multitasking or when using heavier applications due to the age and limitations of the FX CPU.

Recommendations:

  • Backup your data before installation.

  • Create the Deepin Live USB using a tool like Rufus, selecting the "MBR partition scheme for BIOS or UEFI-CSM" option.

  • Ensure Secure Boot is disabled in your motherboard BIOS settings.

  • If you encounter driver issues, consult community resources for Deepin or general Linux help related to your specific AMD Legacy hardware.

Summary: Your system meets the minimum technical requirements for Deepin Linux 25 installation in legacy BIOS mode and should be functional for basic use thanks to the sufficient RAM. However, expect modest performance due to the older CPU. Ensure MBR partitioning is used.

BEWARE! "DEEPIN 25.0.10" HAS A SERIOUS BUG. "LIGHTDM" DISPLAY MANAGER DOESN'T WORK PROPERLY WITH "DEEPIN-INSTALLER-LIVE" AND "LIGHDM-DEEPIN-GREETER". AS A RESULT, WHEREVER YOU CHOOSE "LIVE MODE" OR "INSTALLATION" IN GRUB, IT BRINGS ABOUT BLACK SCREEN RIGHT AFTER THE DEEPIN LOGO.

THE BLACK SCREEN ISSUE DOES NEVER NEVER SHOW UP IN VIRTUAL MACHINE, AND AFFECTS ONLY REAL HARDWARE, ESPECIALLY THE OLD ONES PC, LAPTOPS, OR TABLETS.

Now then, first of all, thank you so much for the helping me out all the way along. Such a nice support is realy super inspiring and awesome.

Your idea about testing an HDD as installation medium wasn't stupid at all, but a good one. I've tested it and got black screen again.🙂 Then I fully realized, that my USB-stick was all-right, and the problem is inside the "Deepin" code. Your AI-Report is interesting to read too...

At long last I've found the culprit, after all that weeks of trial and error. As you know, "Deepin 25" uses "lightdm display manager" in the live mode, installation mode and live-pre-configure GUI.

When in the live mode I'd gotten black screen again, I went into the "tty concole" and tried to start "ddm" instead of "lightdm":

sudo systemctl stop lightdm
sudo systemctl enable ddm
sudo systemctl start ddm
sudo ddm

Then and only then booted GUI 🙂. However it was just a locked screen of live session, and I couldn't get into live system without pasword. The words like "deepin" or "liveuser" didn't work.

After that I knew for shure the problem is somewhere in "lightdm". Tried to edit config file in the tty console:

sudo nano /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf

There were lines for starting "lightdm-deepin-greeter", "deepin-installer-init" and "deepin-installer-life-config" All of them I deleted. Three lines all in all. I deleted them and then I did re-start "lightdm" again and - bingo!

I was able to enter live "Deepin25" for the first time!

It looked beautiful, but my problems didn't end there. When I tried to start up the installation process desktop icon, I got black screen again. 😁

So... basically the bug is not in the "lightdm" as itself. This thing was working after all. Rather it's "lightdm-deepin-greeter" and "deepin-installer-init" failure inside the "lightdm" inside the "lightdm" gtaphical environment. They just wouldn't start for some reason!

Could you spent some more of yours precious time on advice to me?! How should I edit the config file to boot the installation script properly? Or should I start all that "deepin-greeter stuff" in "ddm" instead? But how? I am at loss.

Please exuse me for such a wall of text. I'm really sorry for that. But you see, this bug is really serious. It may affect many users in the Deepin community throughout the world. So we'd better work it out.

P.S. - The bug of "lightdm" and "greeters"'es failure is well-known in linux world. It's called "lightdm race condition" and first surfaced some 15 years ago. Nobody has been able to fix it properly since then. There are many info on the internet on the subject. Here are few examples:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lightdm/+bug/2063983

https://forum.endeavouros.com/t/deepin-is-hard-to-install-correctly/11947/16

P.P.S. - I've tested some of my other hardware. Got black screens with "Deepin25" on such machines as follows:

DESKTOP PC (Radeon RX550 Gpu, Legacy BIOS)

LAPTOP LENOVO G580 (Integrated Intel Gpu, Legacy BIOS),

X86 TABLET PC "DEXP URSUS APOLLO Z110i" (Integrated Intel Gpu, UEFI)

As you see all that hardware is rather old in tooth. So I think the bug affects the older systems.
