Simple fix for weird spaces in US English (likely all English) installations. If you see spaces in odd places in your text, whether it's in a browser of other applications, switch to a standard English font in your Apperance settings (Settings-->Personalization/Font and font size).

For instance, my choice is the standard Noto Sans font. After making that change I have not noticed any strange extra spaces since.
