Hello everyone, today I will briefly describe three typical cases of black screen issues encountered by hybrid GPU laptops in a Linux system environment and share corresponding solutions. Video demonstration link: https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV1uj421d7n1/
Case 1: ASUS TUF Gaming A15 (i7 12700H + Nvidia RTX 3060 Mobile + Ubuntu 22.04)
The user encountered a black screen issue after attempting to install the Nvidia discrete GPU driver on this laptop. Initially, the system would hang on the logo screen, and the user temporarily resolved this by adding the nomodeset parameter to the kernel boot options. However, after installing the Nvidia proprietary driver, the black screen reappeared because the user did not remove the nomodeset parameter in time. Therefore, if you experience a black screen after installing the Nvidia proprietary driver and have the nomodeset parameter in your kernel boot options, be sure to remove it and try again.
Case 2: New ASUS Laptop (i7 13650HX + 4060 Max-Q + Ubuntu 20.04 + 5.15 kernel)
The user needed to use the ROS1 framework, which required them to stick with Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. After updating the Nvidia GPU driver (likely by installing the Nvidia proprietary driver), the user encountered a black screen. Even after manually compiling the 6.7 kernel and reinstalling the Nvidia proprietary driver, the black screen issue persisted. Eventually, the user switched the GPU mode in the BIOS to use the discrete GPU only (dGPU only), which allowed the system to boot and reach the desktop environment. However, there was still no sound from the sound card, which was resolved by updating the appropriate sound firmware. Additionally, the 535 version of the driver from the Ubuntu native repository caused screen flickering, but switching to version 550 from the PPA repository fixed this issue. After resolving the black screen problem, the screen worked normally, even when prime-select was set to "on-demand" mode.
The user experienced system crashes and black screen issues, trying multiple solutions until they were left only able to use the tty terminal. After troubleshooting, the key issues were found to be related to the Secure Boot settings and the need to disable hybrid GPU mode. Since Secure Boot was enabled, the user had to register the Secure Boot key after installing the Nvidia proprietary driver and restarting. To simplify the process, it is recommended that Linux users disable Secure Boot. In addition, the user disabled the hybrid GPU mode for Intel and Nvidia, which finally allowed the system to enter the desktop environment.
