Something is messed up with your environment setup. Here is what you can do to confirm this.
When your machine is booted up, press Alt+Ctrl+F6 switching to a text console. Login with current user account. Run "sudo useradd test1", then "sudo passwd test1". Provides a good password. Log off current user and try logging in as "test1" to confirm the password works.
Then reboot your machine. After the machine is up, logging into as test1. Report back what you got with user "test1".
Other quick checks:
1. Is any file system full? (run: df -h)
2. Any file system error? (run : dmesg)
