strange I had no issues setting up my gmail or exchange accounts. once I put in my gmail address it automatically populated the setup dialogue with all the right parameters. You can download it here: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/ Extract the tarball into your home folder and execute the thunderbird script (simply open the file "thunderbird" and run it) create a link to that file or simply dock it and it will open from then on. Nice thing about getting it directly from mozilla is that it will continuously be updated on it's own. Make sure you remove the old version first though!

Turns out it doesn't work for gmail accounts because it asks for newer versions.
Is there a way I can upgrade it to the newest version?
