Hi,

I've recently made the switch to Linux and really like the Deepin distro. It runs fine on my netbook with Intel graphics but I also have two gaming rigs wich give me allot of problems. Everytime I try to install the closed source drivers wich Deepin recommends my system doesn't want to boot anymore. The specs of the rigs are:

The first
I7 3770K
16GB Ram
Z77 Chipset
Nvidia 970GTX

Second rig:
I7 6700K
16GB Ram
Z170 Asrock OC Formula motherboard
Two R9 390X cards in crossfire

Can somebody help me with choosing the right drivers for this hardware and the correct procedure for installing them. I'm not looking for the best performance since I mostly play CS:GO through steam but I'm looking for something that works.

Any help will be greatly appreciated

How is the performance with the open-source drivers ?
for the first one which Nvidia driver did you try to install ?

On both systems the performance with the open-source drivers is bad since they have to power a 2560 x 1140 display, I only tried the drivers from Driver manager. Since my Linux knowledge is limited I had to reinstall the OS to get my system back up and running so I'm open to suggestions before trying again.

I got both systems running without a problem on Ubuntu based distros when using the latest drivers so the problem lies with Deepin I think.

in the driver manager for Nvidia most had better luck with the 352.63 some had no trouble with the 358.16
I did not know if you tried both or just one of them. Many users prefer to download the latest driver from the Nvidia website
and install.

Thank you very much. I will reinstall Deepin (since I'm running Xubuntu atm) later today and install the drivers through the terminal. I will start with 352.63 and work my way up to see what works and keep you guys posted. Any tips on how to restore my system if a driver fails?

I personally use clonezilla to restore my system.
I have dual AMD cards on my workstation and for me I use the open source. Currently Deepin is trying to fix there AMD drivers in the driver manager
For gaming I would have to check what driver from AMD website is supported in Deepin.

For your AMD driver you can check out this thread on the forum They installed the AMD radeon-crimson 15.12 from AMD's website

dance707 thank you very much. My Nvidia rig is up and running with 352.63, however I have no sound through Displayport but I can live with that atm. Performance is great

Will give my AMD rig a try in a couple of days

I have read Phoronix before . I don't think your links are working , but at least the rig is up and running with Nvidia 352.63
For most people the open source drivers are just as good or better but for gaming rigs the drivers from the manufacturer's website would be better. But if you new to Linux there are not easy to install and configure.

Thanks, links working now. For graphics intensive gaming purposes, currently open-source drivers are generally 2-3 times slower than proprietary, besides compatibilities issues with some APIs or features. For general web/office work that's a non issue so open-source drivers are ok.

Deepin is Debian based, so either we install the drivers provided by Deepin (Driver Manager) or we do it the Debian way (we can always resort to Debian wiki/how to's). Deepin makes it easy with the Driver Manager and if in doubt you should accept the recommend driver as the best/easier solution.

Installing proprietary or open-source featured drivers is somewhat prone to fail, requires some trial and error and to be ready to recover your system. Always keep backups of your data safe before trying. You may turn your system unworkable/unrecoverable. If you're not ready to try to recover from a failed install you shouldn't go any further.

My preference and best experience is to always install the proprietary driver available from the Debian/Deepin repository instead of downloading from the AMD or Nvidia websites. Debian driver packages are pre-prepared to give a better install and easier setup.

Currently Deepin is trying to repair the AMD drivers in the Driver Manager as they are not working for most and he already tried. Does the repository offer something different ?
And should he stick with the Nvidia 352.63 driver that is working for him but some sound issues ?

As far as I know, the drivers from Driver Manager are the same from deepin or debian repository. I really don't know any more. As I wrote before, there's a lot of "trial and error" in it. As I reported on another topic I recently tried to install the AMD fglrx driver and it ended in a crashed system, had to fully reinstall it.

Okay thank you Jotapesee for the links and your perspective.
Was not sure if there was an extra repository to be enabled or not. I like to stick with the repositories if possible but
decided to try the latest manufacturers drivers from AMD and Nvidia
I was able to install Nvidia 361.28 and its working good will post details latter on thread
I currently trying the Radeon-crimson on another computer and hopefully can report on that one too

I was able to install the Nvidia Driver Version 361.28 on a test machine. So far everything seems to be okay. Still testing and checking if it is possible to create a deb buildpkg

The AMD radeon-crimson Fglrx-15.302 is turning out to be much more complicated then the Nvidia. The latest AMD driver installs okay but issues with Deepin Screenshot and waking the monitors from sleep mode. Not sure if there is something I need to blacklist or if I am missing something in preparation.
